Rod Licences

Anyone over the age of 12 fishing in freshwaters in England or Wales must have a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence. We do not check these but we do get occasional visits from Environment Agency representatives who do. You can buy a rod licence at the Post Office or on-line from the Environment Agency's website, click here.  Annual licences start on 1st April each year and you can also get one day or 8 day licences.

Local Pubs, Restaurants & Cider!

Pubs

Within 10-15 minutes drive

The Plough, High Street, Wrington, 01934 862871. Best to book if you want food here as they get very busy (01934 833303). Extensive menu, good quality food, reasonably priced. Consistently good, our favourite at the moment.

The Salthouse, Seafront, Clevedon, 01275 343303. Super location overlooking the sea with large outdoor seating area with patio heaters. Varied menu available and probably worth a visit for the view alone.

The Royal Oak, Copse Road, Clevedon, BS21 7QN, 01275 547420.  Set just behind the seafront (there's a footpath through an alleyway) is this nice locals pub.  Better known for its beer than for food.

The Little Harp, Seafront, Clevedon, 01275 343739. Fabulous views out to sea and to Clevedon Pier - large conservatory and outdoor seating makes the most of this. Recently refurbished and has a nice atmosphere. Extensive and varied menu, however, we've heard varying reports recently.

The Plough, Congresbury. 01934 877402 Nice atmosphere, cosy pub doing good food. Nice garden area.

The Bridge Inn at North End, Yatton, 01934 839139. Closest pub to the lakes and cottages. Approx 3-4 minutes drive or a 20 minute walk. Big roadside pub serving reasonably priced 'average' food. Great indoor and outdoor area for kids. Large car park.

The Old Inn, Paul's Causeway, Congresbury. 01934 832270 Nice place for a Sunday lunchtime drink in the winter. Roaring log fire and small but cosy bar area, it does get busy. Well kept Bass if you're a real ale enthusiast. No food. Beer garden.

The Moorend Spout, North Street, Nailsea. 01275 855336. Good pub grub and good value. Can get busy but a nice drive across the moors to get there.

Within 20 minutes drive

Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano, 01275 842105. Pretty drive through narrow country lanes to reach this very popular old pub which features in the Good Pub Guide. Beer garden.

Hall & Woodhouse, 59 Newfoundland Way, Portishead, BS20 7FP, 01275 848685.  Great pub alongside the marina in Portishead.  The building has won awards for its modern design incorporating lots of glass and shipping containers!  Good menu.  Worth a visit.

Pubs with better than average food - special occasions or if you fancy spoiling yourself

The Pony & Trap, Chew Magna, (35 minute drive but worth it), 01275 332627.  Excellent food/drink/service, almost essential to book.  Fabulous views.

We'd also include the Plough at Wrington on this list (see above).

Murrays, Hill Road, Clevedon. Open 8.30am - 5.00pm Tuesday - Saturday and sometimes they do themed nights on different areas of Italy which are very good.  They also have a very good delicatessen. 01275 341555

LOCAL CIDER

Somerset is a traditional cider-making area and we are lucky enough to have some great producers close by.  Beware though, it goes straight to your knees!

Try Crossman's Cider from Mayfield Farm, Hewish about a 15 minute drive down the A370.   Ben is Phil's second cousin and is a small traditional producer.

Thatchers Cider is about a 20 minute drive away at Myrtle Farm in the village of Sandford.  You may be familiar with Thatchers Gold but you really should try the Traditional or Cheddar Valley varieties which are cloudy in appearance.
