Re-vamp for the Hovis pegs

Good news for those who love to fish on the end of the peninsula on the North Pool – well-known as the Hovis pegs, as Ben has now built a fantastic deck across the whole end providing a safe, level platform to fish from.

New pleasure bag record on Rushcombe Lake

Jason Gore has been fishing his favourite peg, 21, recently with some great results.  His first bag of note was an 89lb bag of carp which included a personal best 11lb common (picture on our website gallery).  Jason was pole fishing with a 16 elastic and 14 hook with sweetcorn on the hook and feeding 4mm pellets with the majority of the fish coming from open water.  He then went on to top this with over 50 fish ranging in weight between 2–9lb (most were around 4-5lb) so, even at a conservative estimate, this means he caught around 200lb of fish thus breaking the previous record of 137lb.

In Jason’s words: “a great day, I don’t use a keepnet but it was a big weight – it was a fish a chuck pretty much all day”.

Repairs to campsite entrance

Repairs to the potholes on the track to the campsite from the main car park have now been completed.

New pleasure bag record on the North Pool

July 2011 - a new pleasure bag record has been set on the North Pool: Clive Hadley from Henley in Arden, Warwickshire, spent a week on our campsite and came with the aim of setting a new lake record. This he did in some style taking a fantastic 305lb bag in the course of one day! All the fish were taken close in on the “Hovis peg”, on banded pellet over a continual bed of 4mm feed. Congratulations to Clive - great photo of part of his catch on the photo gallery, click here.

Charity event - The Willow Foundation

For the third year running, we're delighted to have hosted a charity fishing match organised by a wonderful young lady, Carrie-Anne Aldridge, to raise funds for the Willow Foundation.  The charity, founded by former England goalkeeper Bob Wilson, organises special days out for seriously ill 16-40 year olds throughout the UK.  So far Carrie has managed to raise a fantastic £800 towards this great cause just by holding a fishing match! This year's winner of the match was Stuart Harry who also won in 2009, Tony Lewis won in 2010.

You can visit Carrie's website by following this link: http://www.carriewillow.co.uk/

We're looking forward to welcoming the guys back in 2012 but wish Carrie all the best with her continued fundraising in the meantime.

Additional hook ups at the campsite

We are pleased to announce that we now have a further three electric hook up points on our campsite.  The new pitches are on grass and so are ideal for tents.  We now have a total of 11 hook ups on the site.  It only costs an extra £3 per night to use this facility - for full details, please take a look at the camping page of our website - click here.

Litter

A big thank you to those of you who leave their swim clear of litter, ready for the next person to come along to fish.  Can we make a further plea to those who don't to please ensure that all litter is either taken home or placed in the bins provided in the car park.  It's particularly relevant at this time of year when there are wildfowl nesting as it's very easy for them to get caught up in discarded line and hooks etc.  Can we also ask that any large items of litter eg: chairs, nets, umbrellas, etc are taken home or to your nearest recycling centre for disposal.  Thanks very much for your co-operation.

Latest arrivals

On Tuesday 8th March we took delivery of some beautiful specimen carp to  boost stock in the Carp Lake.  These lovely commons and mirrors weighed in at up to 16lb.  See more photos on the gallery - click here

Lakes Maintenance

A huge amount of maintenance work has been undertaken over the winter months. We have removed a huge amount of snags and overhead branches from all the lakes and 300 tonnes of silt has been dredged from the Carp Lake so, if you haven't fished it for a while, it's probably best to re-plumb!  Along with the snags, we have also removed the silver fish and crucians from the Carp Lake so they will no longer get in the way of you catching the specimen fish.

In addition to the work mentioned above, we have removed the large bed of rushes adjacent to pegs 25-26 of the Match Lake which were holding a lot of fish making it impossible to catch them.

Record fish from Rushcombe Lake

Judy Pickering now holds the record for the largest fish caught from Rushcombe Lake.  Judy, staying on our campsite with husband Roger in September 2010, caught a beautiful 14lb 6oz common carp on sweetcorn feeding 4mm pellet from peg 21.   Photo is on our gallery.

Judy beats the previous record held by Luke Nix, who also has his photo on our gallery, has broken the record for the largest fish caught from Rushcombe Lake so far!  Luke caught a lovely 10lb common carp on the pole with a size 16 hook and luncheon meat from the margins of peg 5.  Luke had a great day and finished up with a 90lb bag of fish.

This just goes to show how much the fish have grown since we stocked the lake in 2003.

We've been on TV again!

Phil has made yet another TV appearance (for no fee I should add!), this time on national TV.  Earlier in the summer we were approached by Tom Sims who was appearing on the BBC3 programme 'Don't Tell the Bride ' asking if we would have space to put a yurt to accommodate his wedding guests.  For those of you who aren't familiar with the programme, the groom is given £12,000 towards the cost of his wedding but has to organise the whole event himself with no input from his bride at all.  Unfortunately Tom's yurt dream didn't come to fruition therefore there was no wedding reception here but Phil did make a couple of brief appearances in the programme.

We're delighted to feature in the Angling Times' Top 50 Stillwaters feature published in March 2010.

Pleasure bag record broken on the Carp Lake

Congratulations to Shawn Kittridge who has broken the pleasure bag record on the Carp Lake! Shawn, a carpenter from Weston super Mare, broke the record on this lake with a huge 243lb pleasure bag, beating the previous record of 230lb set by Haydn Thompson last June. Shawn’s bag came from peg 1 and included mirrors to 12lb, crucians to 2.5lb and commons to 8lb. He fished on the pole to the left-hand margin 7 metres and 13 metres from his swim. A combination of paste and corn over 4mm pellet on a 14 hook and 4lb line with 16 elastic made it work for him. Luckily for Shawn, his haul was witnessed by his friends as they were fishing in the lake adjacent to him in the final of the Kev Perry Series.

New bridge

Work has now been completed on the new bridge from the main back to the island of the Match Lake.  The work was carried out by Benedict Simmons Landscaping and it looks terrific.  If you're thinking of revamping your garden click here to have a look at Ben's website to see what he can offer you, or contact him on 07880 840212.
